Creating Healthy Habits – Bone Broth

A cup of broth a day keeps the doctor away…

The health benefits of bone broth are no longer a secret, but many may find it difficult to integrate it into their daily meals. The nourishing effect is so convincing that broth earns to be consumed on a daily basis.

Many children suffer from digestive issues, allergies, and mood disorders. Meat stock and bone broth are an excellent way to heal and nourish the gut. A lot of research has been happening in the field of gut microbiota and its connection to diseases, mood, and mental health. Over 70% of our immune system cells are located in the gut lining.

If you want to fix your child’s health, start with the gut.

You can already find bone broth powder as a supplement in health food stores but in my opinion, there is no need to buy an expensive supplement when cooking broth is so super easy and less expensive. It is important to always buy the best quality. In case of soup bones, it means buying from a local ranch which cares about organic farming and grass-fed kettle.

Talking about healthy habits, a cup of hot broth or stock enjoyed as a beverage, is definitely health-supporting and thus worth to be your and your families new habit!

Meat Stock isn’t cooked as long as bone broth and is ideal if gut healing (leaky gut) is the primary focus.  Meat stock is rich in gelatin and amino acids, which are particularly beneficial in healing and strengthening the gut lining as well as lessening digestive tract inflammation. Gelatin assists in the proper digestion of proteins and thus ensures optimal growth in infants and children.

Bone Broth is perfect after the gut is healed to maintain optimum nourishment. Broth is cooked much longer to pull out all the minerals. It contains the same amino acids as stock but in much higher amounts resulting from the longer cooking time. For individuals with leaky membranes in the gut and brain, the high concentration of glutamic acid may be problematic. This would usually go away when the gut lining is healed.

Freeze in single serving sizes

So let’s do it and create that new habit of one cup of broth or stock per day. Cook your broth, let it cool and pour it through a sieve into ice cube trays or muffin/cupcake tin. An ice cube tray will work better.

Start the day with a cup of warm broth

Put one or two of your frozen broth cubes into a cup and cover with boiling water. Don’t fill up the whole cup. Let it melt and then fill the cup completely with boiling water. Use a pinch of sea salt. Enjoy!

Other ways to use it…

  • as the liquid part in mashed potatoes
  • in any kind of sauce
  • put 1-2 cubes in your pot with cooked rice or noodles, it prevents from sticking and adds flavor
  • you can fry vegetables in it

The possibilities are endless. Once used to include it in your cooking you will miss it when you run out of stock in your freezer.

Let me know about your preferences. What is your favorite way to use bone broth?
