Time for a Healthy Change

HEALTH GOALS 2018

It is hard to believe how quickly 2017 has flown by! You might have thought about setting some New Year’s resolutions, but I tell you, forget about it! Instead, I will help you to set some awesome HEALTH GOALS!

Creating a FAMILY HEALTH WISH LIST

Take out a piece of paper and list the things regarding your families health and what you would like to accomplish in 2018. Write down whatever comes to your mind, even if it seems too simple or difficult. No matter if your wish is to include more vegetables into your kid’s meal, improving food sensitivities, getting rid of ongoing illness, or simply increasing outdoor and your families quality-time. Christmas Meal Traditions and Memories

As a German in Canada, I often get asked about our traditional German Christmas Meal.

I have to add that I am the daughter of a Turkish mother and an Austrian father and both decided in their early twenties to move and live in Germany. So our cultural traditions were always very influenced by these three countries. When I was a child no one of my Turkish relatives would have celebrated Christmas. Today things have changed and I see that my cousins in Turkey love to set up a Christmas tree, celebrate and feast in big crowds of family and friends. The social aspect in Turkey is just so different than in any other country I have been so far. They love to spend time with other peoples, cook and eat together. Miss these times in Turkey with my family and friends!

I always get carried away when I talk about my memories of Turkey....

Back to the Christmas Meal!

Which foods are best for a bedtime snack?

I know…it can be extremely annoying. I finished cleaning up the kitchen after dinner and just settled into the relaxing part of the evening, and then….someone is asking me for a snack. Or it is time for the kids to go to the bathroom and get ready for bed, and my son says “I am hungry”.

Bedtime snack, yes, or no?

I say, why not, but have a list of quick and little bedtime snacks ready to avoid the desperate search for something nourishing, what isn’t too much, too sweet, or too heavy to digest in the evening. The digestive system needs a break at night to facilitate deep and resting sleep while the brain starts to clean the house by releasing hormones and processing new memories and the information gained throughout the day. There is a lot more happening in our children’s body while they sleep, but to keep the long story short, the body is in night shift work, which simply means: cleaning, growing, and healing. Deep sleep is one of the most fundamental ways our body heals itself and it is linked to weakened immunity and many physical and mental disorders if impaired.

Let’s say the average dinner time is around 6 p.m. and with kids around the age of 9-12 bedtime might be 8:30 p.m. or even later. (My kids are super talented in stretching that part of the evening suuuper long)

So that said, I am ok with a bedtime snack IF : Continue Reading…

The Health Benefits of your Turkey Feast

Nutritious Turkey

Turkey belongs to the group of high-protein foods, which are beneficial to keep us fueled and our post-meal insulin levels within a desirable range. 4oz/113g of skinned turkey breast will provide 30-35g of protein. So if you are looking for a food to increase protein intake, here you go.

In addition to protein, all B vitamins are present in turkey meat, including B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, folate, biotin, and choline. Turkey is an excellent source of vitamin B3 (niacin) and provides over 80% of the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of it in 113grams. B6 54% DRI in 113g. Overall, turkey provides a good amount of B vitamins, which are beneficial for a balanced nervous system and also for digestion and skin.

In terms of minerals, turkey is richest in selenium and provides over 60% of the DRI in a single 113g serving. Zinc, copper, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, and iron are also provided.

It is important to care about animal welfare. Appropriate housing, water, and feed do not only keep the animal happy and healthy, it produces also a healthier meal richer in nutrients. A pasture-raised turkey which was able to enjoy omega-3 containing plants and insects in natural pasture settings will contain a higher omega-3 content for you as well. Check out local farms to support animal welfare and small farmers.

What is L-Tryptophan?

On the most fundamental level, tryptophan is an essential amino acid required to make many different proteins in the body. L-tryptophan rich foods are supposed to have a calming, relaxing effect. However, the big food coma following a Thanksgiving feast isn’t the result of L-tryptophan rather the consequences of overeating and the indulgence of meals and desserts too high in carbohydrates. Eating too much at one meal overwhelms the digestion and takes a lot of energy. Refined carbohydrates might also cause blood glucose spikes with the following energy crash.
