Grapefruit-Kale Juice

GRAPEFRUIT is an excellent source of vitamin C, a vitamin that helps to support the immune system. Vitamin C also prevents free radical damage that triggers inflammation. An increasing body of evidence shows that chronic inflammation causes and advances many common diseases.

The rich pink and red colours of grapefruit are due to lycopene, a carotenoid phytonutrient, which appears to have anti-tumor benefits.

Furthermore, a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that when women drank 1/2 to 1 liter of grapefruit, apple or orange juice daily, their urinary pH value and citric acid excretion increased, significantly dropping their risk of forming calcium oxalate stones.

Researchers also confirmed that grapefruit may help prevent weight gain by lowering insulin levels.

In case you are on any prescription drug, ask your doctor if your medication would be affected by consuming grapefruit juice. Certain pharmaceutical drugs combined with grapefruit juice become more potent. Compounds in grapefruit juice slow the normal detoxification and metabolism processes in the intestines and liver, which hinders the body’s ability to breakdown and eliminate these drugs.

KALE is a very nutrient rich vegetable and people either love it or hate it. But what is really remarkable, is it’s lutein and zeaxanthin content, both carotenoids, which are best known for its supportive role in eye health, and in particular, for its ability to protect different parts of the eye from potential damage by light or oxygen.

Kale is amongst other nutrients an excellent source of Vitamin K, A and C. Vitamin K’s primary job is to help blood clot when we get injured. About half of this vitamin is produced by our body’s own intestinal bacteria. Furthermore, vitamin K strengthens blood vessel walls. Applying a vitamin K cream on certain areas of your body might be beneficial to prevent and heal bruises.

Vitamin K plays also a role in bone formation. Deficiency may be a factor in osteoporosis. Also a deficiency was used to be rare, todays overuse of antibiotics may be inhibiting intestinal vitamin K production.

Overall Kale is super nutrient dense and definitely a health supporting addition to your juices and smoothies.

Grapefruit-Kale Juice

Serves: 1
Cooking Time: 10

Ingredients

  • 1-2 Grapefruit
  • 3-4 Kale leaves
  • optional 1 TBSP Apple Cider Vinegar
  • optional a handful of parsley or other herbs

Instructions

1

Peel, wash your ingredients

2

I put always some juicy fruit pieces in right behind or together with leafy greens to help squeeze and wash out all the good stuff.

3

Depending on your juicer I also re-insert the pulp and let it run 2-3 times through the juicer. It will produce a juice with more pulp, that way the fiber content will not be all lost.

Notes

After juicing the last piece of fruit or vegetable, I always pour a little bit of water into my running juicer to flush out all the remaining juice.
